The NBA in the 1980s and 1990s is often seen as an era of financial stability and expansion. The league saw money come in at a previously unprecedented rate, most of it coming for the new found television revenue. The NBA added 11 new teams from 1976 until 1996. The league also found three superstars to hang its image on in Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.
In 2014, a video of National Football League star running back Ray Rice punching his wife and dragging her unconscious body from an elevator shocked the nation. It pushed the already-simmering issue of NFL players’ domestic assaults into national prominence, sparking protests and calls for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to resign.
Jackie Robinson broke the racial barrier while Babe Ruth captured the imagination of fans. The New York Yankees are the most popular team in all of baseball and even during the 90’s era tainted by performance enhancing drugs, baseball remains a solid #2 on this list with current stars like Aaron Judge, Clayton Kershaw and Mike Trout breaking records and dominating opponents.
